1/10 McAfee: Dependable as a Cardboard Roof in the Rain, and Blind as a Bat

mojaveland - 10/05/08

I tried McAfee because it was an option included with my ISP provider, but not long after downloading it noticed that it not only made my PC slower than a dinosaur caught in a tar pit, but also allowed vicious spy/malware onto my PC. The infections caused Internet Explorer and countless pop ups to open up against my will every time on Start-up. After repeated scans, McAfee kept telling me there were no infections. I then called my ISP, followed by McAfee. After running a remote scan and still finding nothing, I was told by a McAfee agent I'd have to pay extra for Level 2 Tech Support in order to solve the problem. I replied, "No, I shouldn't have to pay for protection that I'm already paying for through my ISP." After repeated East Indian accented replies of "I'm sorry sir but that's the way it is", I terminated the call and tried PC Tools Spyware Doctor (highly recommended), which easily identified the 77 infections that McAfee missed, and eliminated them from my PC. I then (this is almost 7 months ago) sent a detailed list, by email to both my ISP and McAfee of the threats that PC Tools identified in the hopes McAfee would use the info to improve and update it's protection service, but to this day have yet to hear back from McAfee with even the slightest apology, "thank you", or "we'll look into it". McAfee: Thumbs down on their dependability and service. If your ISP offers you free security software from them, just say "no".
