7/10 Software Request

vuduyquan - 11/14/08

AVG's actual performance, on the other hand, was quite good. Anti-Virus correctly identified and quarantined each of several viruses and spyware we had put in place. Real-time scanning was quick and didn't noticeably slow down Web surfing. Automated updates to the definition files took little time and occurred several times a day, ensuring that the program caught the latest malware. The Warnings category under Scan Results, however, was less successful, fingering over 50 "potentially dangerous objects" that were mostly ActiveX registry keys. Without attached explanations, it would be impossible for most users to say what each object referred to. We don't recommend using AVG's "remove selected infections" button from this screen unless you really know what you are doing. Scans have numerous options, including the ability to search inside archive files (such as .zip archives), find cookies, identify rootkits, and use heuristics. One of the best options was the ability to choose one of three scan settings. You can do a virus scan slower while at work, to keep your computer running at a decent speed; or run it at the fastest rate while you're at lunch, to get more of the scan accomplished. We were able to change the CPU consumption while a scan was in progress, too. You can configure the size of the file quarantine, the maximum number of files kept there, and the length of time before its contents are deleted.
