The Internet IS BY AND LARGE OPEN
I certainly don't like 'hidden' control over streamed content.
At Present Flash and SilverLight are proprietary and though 'free' are controlled entirely by the copyright corporate holders Adobe and Microsoft.
There is definitely their 'phone home who knows what without telling us aspect', and also that awkward or difficult workarounds are needed to copy and distribute content that is often copyright free.
Put simply I am far more suspicious of corporate greed than I am of 'open source' software that can clearly and easily be checked and verified.
Take iTunes or Real network as examples of horrors that can and do occur.
As for governments dominating open source, that is a
COMPLETE nonsense.
There are a lot of VERY ABLE independently minded and certainly NOT government sponsored people working on open source software and OS.
Many of these would take grave offence at being described as 'government led' or 'government influenced.
That is the WHOLE POINT of open source - to be free from corporate or political influence.
I seriously doubt Adobe or Microsoft allow their programmers any independent outlook.
Yes there is good private corporate software BUT for many open source provides an equally good alternative.
