does anyone remember "On Demand Computing?"
If the cloud computing concept (funny how this melds with most Sr Management Morons' view of IT anyway, i.e., it just comes out of the wall like electricity) sings a Siren song about just vending out to the "experts" who will do it cheaper, please remember IBM's non-starter, On Demand Computing.

It was some IBM moron's idea of a new idea, to take what the mainframe had done for years, keep track of usage by user or user group and extend it to the other computing platforms. From there it was a short step to trying to convince customers to turn over their computing needs to remote centers run by IBM. That way they'd only pay for the assets they used and not have to buy excess capacity for production spikes.

Two things stuck in customers' craw: their production data was no longer in their control but available to anyone at the remote site who cared to look (yes Mr. Customer, our Lotus Notes technicians can read your e-mail, no way to prevent this) and they wouls have lost control of their upgrade cycles. That is, by sharing physical assets with other companies it became difficult to schedule general and specific maintenance that fit everyone's schedules.

No one ever bought On Demand for production outside of the internal IBM users. Frankly, I wouldn't trust it for anything heavier duty than providing print server service. This cloud services strikes me as more of the same: do like SAP and sell to the BOD, and let everyone else pick up the pieces.
