This lot may be a bit old but...
technically superior? I guess we'll never really know given that MS "java" didn't run Java, it ran some bastardised half-language that kinda looked like Java so nothing written for Java would ever run on it. Embrace and extend, except Java because you signed a contract, eh Bill.

I don't care if OOXML febreezes everything and cooks a full roast dinner every night, I still can't use it unless I pay off^H^H^H for MS Office.

Vista, XP, IE and Office are not the most popular things because millions of us are kretins.

You're right, MS got lucky when the IBM BIOS was reverse engineered, then they got greedy and put false error messages in early versions of Windows for if you ran the 'wrong' DOS, threatened and coerced computer sellers so that for many years there was no alternative unless you could pay $$$ for a Mac and now they have vendor lock-in. While people are trying to use alternatives they can't because whoever jumps first can't guarantee that those still using the old vendor-lockin Office software will be able to read any documents sent to them, even if in a supposedly compatible format. Because OOXML is effectively a closed format, there is no guarantee that anything saved by ABM will look as it should when opened in MS Office just as there is no guarantee now, so technical proficiency is irrelevant, Microsft could sell base, substandard products for years and get away with it because people would need to pay the MS tax just to guarantee that they could have software that would run on the supported O/S that would at all read all their files and change the file format every now and then to ensure upgrades so people would be able to exchange files...

...hang on...
