Yes, that is a "feature" caused by Microsoft Outlook RTF email messages. We set Outlook to send messages as plain text to avoid problems like this. (We don't want our customers using non-Outlook clients, webmail, etc. to think we are idiots.)

Occasionally we have a user, who thinks he knows better, that resets his client to RTF. So we have a script on our email gateway that opens the winfile.dat and converts the message to plain text with a normal attachment. It does the same with inbound messages.

As I recall, Outlook 2003's default setting is plain text, so thank you to MS for taking this step to fix the problem.

Now if they take the next step and remove the ability of users to send RTF mail everyone will be better off.
