Is it really?
So Unix is replaced by Linux... the job of administration is still there, so the administrator will and can still be employed. His skills are more than adequate to run Linux or FreeBSD.

As for Windows on the desktop, it is only the product of choice because of the stranglehold Microsoft had and to some extent still has on the market as to what can and cannot be installed / sold.

Linux is most assuredly a lower cost to own than Microsoft ever will be.

OS Cost
Microsoft = $50-75 OEM install or $145-200 for the CD

Linux
Well let's see, burn your own = $0.00
Order from This place or from This Place or from This place

Prices range from $.99 ? 10.00

OS Cost: Linux wins

Productivity Software
Microsoft Office (full package with database) = $500.00 ? 700.00

Linux Open Office = Donations if you please otherwise... $0.00

So again, how is Windows cheaper? For the home user? Hmmm? I am just not seeing it.

I am still trying to find a site that I can do a fair comparison on for same hardware and different OS installs. Once I find it, I will be sure to post it here for you.
