... the penguin sleeps tonight.
Yes, the penguin is capable of raging through the jungle, beak reddened in the blood of innocent dwellers in the villages of Unix.

But the subject here is Microsoft on the desktop.

Remember the quiet, soothing melody at the end of Night on Bare Mountain? The viciousness that pranced and raved has withdrawn, cowed by the light of day, and people can return to their quiet, safe, secure lives unthreatened, sheltered by a greater power watching over them like Bill Gates reading his black boxes.

If you want heavy-handed metaphor, you've come to the right shop.

Briefly, many customers like Windows because the operating system does so much for them. Windows is the known brand, and that belief would, for most people, survive even a demonstration that some alternative is technically better.

And some companies are looking at Linux, just prior to their contract negotiations with Microsoft. What many find is, of course, that the costs of changing are prohibitive. Unless they're governments, able to increase revenue (taxes) at will, they will stay with Windows, as they expect. But maybe get a cheaper contract price from Microsoft.
And the tools from Microsoft will always be easier, I expect, because Microsoft is not looking to servicing their software as a primary income generator.
