Tsk tsk tsk...
?With all the computers being sold, so long as Windows remains the default choice they could change only the colors on the Windows flag and still make a major profit.?

Therein lies the problem, for the most part, although it is slowly changing, Microsoft is the default as in only choice when purchasing a new PC / Laptop. And hence the abuse of monopoly position.

You will try to argue that that is what the customer wants. How do you know what they want? To be honest most users don't give a rat's @ss about the OS, so long as they can surf the web, play a couple of games maybe and write letters to Aunt Mathilda.

?And a major Microsoft market, maybe their most essential market, is developers. If there are changes under the hood that make developers happy enough to develop for Windows exclusively (developer lock-in if you're disgruntled), then the operating system will keep Microsoft's positive feedback loop turning.
This is also why they're talking about putting a number of the Longhorn features into XP. Makes sure the user base is large enough for the developers.

Momentum does good things for Microsoft.
?

But Anton, many companies and developers are starting to move away from Microsoft. Linux is the biggest reason why. Business is finally understanding just how much they have been bamboozled. Sure they have the ease of use, but the open source tools are getting there AND with the open source solutions the product's / tools that are built can be easily ported across OS's! Now that is a powerful developer base. Preach as much as you want, the momentum Microsoft has will carry it down to the bottom, much like the momentum of the Titanic drove her into the iceberg then eventually to her final resting place. Microsoft is the business equivalent of the Titanic and the iceberg is open source / Linux. Fear the penguin Anton... fear the penguin.
