With all the computers being sold, so long as Windows remains the default choice they could change only the colors on the Windows flag and still make a major profit.

And a major Microsoft market, maybe their most essential market, is developers. If there are changes under the hood that make developers happy enough to develop for Windows exclusively (developer lock-in if you're disgruntled), then the operating system will keep Microsoft's positive feedback loop turning.
This is also why they're talking about putting a number of the Longhorn features into XP. Makes sure the user base is large enough for the developers.

Momentum does good things for Microsoft.
