No Ax, I don't think it's that extreme
---Regardless of MS saying it, they really are in a "bet the company" situation---

So if Longhorn is not a huge smashing success, MS will go out of business? I somehow don't think so. They are so entrenched that regardless of the quality of their latest OS, they'll continue to rake in money for years and years. What other choice do OEMs really have but to accept what MS offers them for preload on their machines? What other choice do consumers who want compatibility with the programs they already own have if they want a new machine?

The quality of Longhorn doesn't really matter, nor does the actual date it goes on sale. Sure, if it's great, it could further entrench the MS monopoly, but even if it sucks, it won't bring down the whole company immediately. It could be part of a long, slow decline at worst.

Take away the OS from MS, and they could still have a highly profitable business from Office alone.
