Ouch
"Gates merely reiterated recent recommendations that such systems should have 512MB of memory,"

Let's see - current Windows claims 128 MB is enough, but 512 is much more realistic.

So - if he recommends 512, then realistically it will be 2 GB?

"Microsoft's effort to reduce the number of people who run with administrator privileges is one example of the features that are still being ironed out. Today, almost all users run with such privileges because they are needed to make even basic changes, but the company is reworking the operating system so that various settings can be altered while running as a standard user."

LOL! This is sooo amusing - and unfortunately, so true. Linux and other OSes solved this problem a long time ago, and Windows is still playing catch up.

" Microsoft officials said they still expect to meet their timetable for Longhorn"

If I had a dollar for every time they said that . . .

" Gates did promise that Microsoft's biggest-ever marketing campaign would accompany Longhorn's release."

That's one promise I'm sure he'll keep wink.
The company demonstrated a new XML-based document format, code-named "Metro,"
Doesn't Word already do that?

"Printers that build in Metro support will be able to more quickly and faithfully render documents created in Longhorn,"

As opposed to my current printer, whose speed is limited by the mechanical inkjet printhead, and renders my documents perfectly?
while users will be able to share files without needing the application that created them, Microsoft said.
Of course. Now, when they try to open an unrecognized file format, such as a saved game file written in their XML document format, it will allow me to play it without having the game?

No, it'll most likely give me a bunck of useless XML junk displayed in a browser window. Wow, how useful.

I'd bet most people already have Microsoft Office or OpenOffice.org - which can read MS Office documents just fine (and already uses XML in its own format).

So most people can already read the different document formats without problems - what exactly is the problem they're trying to solve again?
Also, he said, Longhorn will come in a single binary for all the different language editions.
Congratualations! You have all the languages you ever wanted, even if they do nothing but take up space on your harddrive!
Mac fans will find continued similarities in Microsoft's changes.
Big surprise - not.
such as sorting documents "created by brutus" into various categories based on keywords.
Companies will like this. Individual users? I probably still have some default "user" assigned to all my documents, lol.

"One demo, a futuristic tablet PC that would be as thin as 10 sheets of paper, turned out to be little more than a mock-up."

Do I even need to comment on this?

BTW, even current Tablets aren't worth the investment yet.

Nice preview. Too bad it only confirms what everybody's saying - It's nothing more than a small upgrade from XP. I'm hesitant to even call it a new OS.
