I agree with your entire post.

If MS can't produce some magic with Longhorn they will be
savage by investors (short term) and in the market (longer
term).

You can't keep spending billions of shareholders money
and produce nothing, especially when the competition is
moving very swiftly and in some cases at dramatically lower
price points than windows.

MS has two products that account for near 100% of their
profit, windows and Office. Can they produce a rabbit out
of either hat?
