The drop in sales is due to a poor economy, less music released, independent artists, radio overkill promotion, and bad RIAA PR.

don't forget the number one reason for the drop in sales: THE MUSIC SUCKS

They continually keep banking large sums of money on CD's that wouldn't have cut muster 10 or 15 years ago. I remember when I was younger how artists released albums every few YEARS, worked like crazy to come up with new songs, had them recorded over weeks and months, and then went on yearlong tours to promote their music. Now, songs are recorded in a day (or an afternoon if it's that hip-hop rap poopoo), tours have only 12 stops, and albums are released every year. No wonder people turn to downloading, where they can at least download the 2-3 songs they really want....?!
