it's not like Microsoft where I have to licence the OS to use on more than 1 PC let alone my primary.

But that's exactly what you're doing. When you buy the Slackware boxed set (which I hope you have the sense to use) and you install it on five computers, you're making five copies of Slackware. That's against the law, unless you have a license. It turns out you do have one, the GPL, which is free. Microsoft will gladly provide you with a license to install it on five computers (or five licenses to install it once) but it will cost you.

That's not the same as restrictions on use, however. You have to promise Microsoft you won't decompile its software before it will let you install it. If you get a binary of a GPL'd program you can reverse engineer it til the cows come home. But it's probably easier to look at the source.
