Obsolecence...
Macs easily have useful lives 3 times that of a PC. Macs such as a G4/500 discontinued 5 years ago are working better than new.

I can't speak for ALL PC's, but I recently retired an ancient Pentium 100 box that finally died due to a power spike. After becoming too slow to operate as a primary computer, I reconfigured the old boat anchor as a server. The puppy was about 10 years old. The other reason why the box was finally retired - the BIOS would not recognize an large, modern drives.

The role of "server" on my network is now delegated to yet another future boat anchor - this time a sub-GHz Celeron box donated to the cause by a client who upgraded to a more modern and up to date computer. Sure, it's slow, but for what it does, it does it well enough. It'll be up and running until some hardware failure finally kills it.

SOME people tend to throw their older computers away after they no longer deem them useful. And SOME people make use of whatever resources they have available. This is true of the PC universe, as well as in the realm of the Mac.
