"Now, with Macromedia's Flash animation and application development software in its portfolio, Adobe has positioned itself as a primary competitor against Microsoft on the one hand and open standards on the other in building new platforms for Web applications."

Adobe's purchase of Macromedia is as much an effort to stave off open-source competitors as it is to fend off Microsoft. Tell me, how are PDF and Flash formats less "closed" than Office documents? Doesn't Adobe "own" the PDF format? Doesn't Macromedia (now Adobe) "own" the Flash format?

It appears it isn't "closed" formats you hate, it's simply Microsoft. At least be completely honest about it.
