Forget the desktop; these companies have.

Second paragraph of the article:
The companies said that the deal would help create a more powerful source of tools for building and distributing multimedia content across a range of operating systems and devices. They repeatedly stressed their belief that the merger would allow them to expand more rapidly into the market for audio and video applications for use in handhelds and other gadgets.

Microsoft owns the desktop, but not devices.

This looks like an attempt to evade Microsoft, not compete with it.


Notice, too, the concentration on multimedia content. On desktops, how is multimedia delivered, mostly? Why, through Windows multimedia capabilities, of course.
The combined companies will need a good, close working relationship with Microsoft to continue effectively.

Maybe you'll get the competitor you're looking for. But that's not the only possible outcome here.
