along theses lines was contained in a book about Microsoft (read 8-10 years ago).
IIRC, back in the early '90s, a company called Go approached MS about computer-based, handwriting technology and it followed this same scenario.
Go approached MS with it's ideas, and not being totally stupid or naive, asked (demanded) that any "technical" meetings or discussions be held with non-engineering/non-technical MS people.
MS, of course, said "No problem (snicker, snicker)" and proceeded to send software engineers posing as just regular marketing/management types. After months of discussions and Go showing it's family jewels, MS basically said "Not interested", broke off contact and few months later, introduced it's own handwriting technology.
MS Partner (aka victim): You screwed us!
MS: You trusted us.
