My guess is..
MS had a working relationship with Alacritech so that they could learn how Alacritech's stuff worked. Once they had that, MS no longer needed Alacritech, and could make their own. It's happened to too many MS 'partners' in the past for it be mere coincidence.

Unfortunately for MS, Alacritech managed to get an injunction. That's more than most of MS's former 'partners' managed before they were went under after MS pulled the rug out from under them.
