JBoss is an App Server and it is given away for free. The article also mention Sun App Server as being free although I don't know if it runs on Linux...
Also, it would be interesting a price comparison between the Win and the Lin environment (neither a Hyundai nor a Ferrari are free but the price difference is considerable).
