GCC's GJC compiles Java code to native binary
http://gcc.gnu.org/java/

Quote
GCJ is a portable, optimizing, ahead-of-time compiler for the Java Programming Language. It can compile:

* Java source code directly to native machine code,
* Java source code to Java bytecode (class files),
* and Java bytecode to native machine code.

Compiled applications are linked with the GCJ runtime, libgcj, which provides the core class libraries, a garbage collector, and a bytecode interpreter. libgcj can dynamically load and interpret class files, resulting in mixed compiled/interpreted applications.

You can compile your Java projects down to native code executables either as normal applications, dynamic libaries and RedHat developers current plans include support for plugin modules which can be plugged in to existing compiled frameworks.

As for performance, See SSA for Trees - a Redhat developer led project

The goal of this project is to build an optimization framework for trees based on the Static Single Assignment (SSA) form.

This is producing much faster executing Java code.
