RE: hmm
>You were obviously able to install 10.1, which loads the full OS minus the finder to install, in which had it been the OS itself, it would not have booted.

Actually I was not. It would never complete an install of 10.1 using the DVD-ROM... even after zero-ing out my hard drive using my OS 9 disks (once the 10.1 installer did it's work, the only way I could back into the Mac was with an OS 9 installer.) After sitting on the phoen with Apple for a couple hours I ended up wiping it again and replacing the DVD-ROM with a Que CDRW (took it out of it's FireWire case and installed it in the Mac.) Once installed I even swapped the drives back out to see if it would function once installed, but it wouldn't function consistently. I could get it to access DVDs and/or CDs (sometimes movies, sometimes apps) only around 30% of the time. So I put the CDRW back and lived with that for a year or so. It was a mess of a problem that turned me off from Apple for a while and got turned up a little again when I finally upgraded to Jaguar and low-and-behold, I could even install Jaguar with the DVD-ROM.

Since then I haven't experienced any problems. I had upgraded the Mac over the years with additional hard drives, a new(er) Radeon card, eventually replaced the DVD-ROM with a Pioneer DVR-106, etc., all without a hitch... but then I also stopped getting Mac OS upgrades until they lived in the wild a little bit.

Just recently I finally sold that old PowerMac (you gotta love Mac resale values!) I bought a Mac mini with similar specs to the upgrades. I went from a Sawtooth 800MHz/512MB/110GB/Mac Radeon/DVDRW to a Mini 1.25GHz/512MB/80GB/Radeon 9200/DVDRW and actually got just $100 more for my old Mac than I spent on the Mini!

...and I will upgrade that Mini with Tiger, just 1-2 months after it's initial release happy
