Opera did some great things, and I'd hate to see it no longer viewed as a contender. Gratitude is a good word. Many common browser features started somewhere else, and few users even know it.

Few acknowledge that almost all major features in IE were taken from Netscape. There may have been improvements, but IE shows little real innovation.

I can still remember early browsers that were single threaded, where images loaded one at a time and the hourglass blocked you from doing anything (even scrolling) until the page loaded. That's assuming that the images even loaded. If they were jpeg, then an external application could be used to view them. If I had to rank all the browser innovations since the Mosaic days, I'd expect that Netscape's would fall into the "must have" list, Opera's and Mozilla/Firefox's would fall into the "very nice to have" list, and most people would be surprised to hear that browsers ever lacked some of those features.

As for Firefox, it's got enough innovation on its own that nobody can accuse it of stealing the thunder from Opera, but Opera deserves many kudos for things such as tabbed browsing, a pop-up blocker, mouse gestures, and other things that we now take for granted.
