You are quite right on Linux
Your experience with Linux is quite right. Linux is useful on low-cost web-servers and special niche s/w environment. Beyond that it is quite useless. The problem lies with GUI and crappy s/w products. From my past experiences that strech over decade, I have to say Linux will never make it as alternative desktop systems.
