Corporations are interesting entities!
>>All the GPL does is provide a license to protect small developers from getting ripped of for their work. If you don't want to use it, that is fine. There are many other licenses (both Open Source and Commercial). I am not sure how the key players come into your arguement, though.<<

Those small developers should learn to document their work. And I do not. I use a commercial system.

There is a term we have for people like you: unemployed!

>>The GPL is only 1 license, if you don't want to use it then don't. If you choose to create your own EULA, go for it! But stop whining about the GPL!<<

And again I don't use it. Silence others if you do not agree with them. Or I will discuss it whether you like it or not.

Ok, keep whining! You are good at it, I can tell!

>>The BSD network stack was created by BBN for the DARPA/Internet project backin the late 60's to early 80's, first implemented on BSD Unix. The University did not create it!<<

Sort of. BBNs stack was rewritten by Bill Joy and implemented at the university with the help of the students. We are using a decendant of that stack.

Doesn't change where it came from!

>>Stallman is a physicist, he didn't want to et screwed by commercial interests for hs work. I am guessing that you don't mind if some corporation takes your work and gives you nothing. That is your right.<<

Those are the breaks when employed by a university. Since he was allowed access to the code, why deny it to corporations? He wouldn't profit either way. Corporations cannot forbid you to use the code if it was documented at the university.

He doen't deny it to corporations, he just says that if you use the code you must agree to abide by the license. This is just normal business practices. If I wrote the code, I have the right to set teh terms for its usage.

>>The freedom that GPL refers to is the freedom for the individual to do what the want with the code they write. I am guessing fom your posts that you prefer corporations to tell you how to use a given piece of software.<<

No I do not want to see corporations not able to compete. Corporations provide jobs that people need to keep the economy running. I do not see corporations as the enemy like you do.

Corporatons do compete, though they don't innovate much! Corporations compete on a global basis, consolidate operations and cut redundancies (do RIFs of people like you). That is not relavent to the discussion, just a tangent. As to creating jobs, corporations automate processes to ct the labor force (payroll) to meed stockholder financial expectations (and pay dividents to people like me).

Examples of how this works:

IN the old days, you had typing pools (lots of people working, low skill requirements), then they got word processing which reduced the needs for people and increased the skill demands. Then they got networked machines, again increasingthe skill requirements and redusing the staffing demands.

In manufacturing, corporations moved to automation to reduce headcount and increase the skill requirements for those that they kept. As this went global (think multinational corporation), they could lookfor the higher skill lower cost workes in any location around the workd (popular places now include India, Eastern European countries). Also holds true for computer work.

Persoanlly, I think this is great though it does not apply to me, I run my own business in a $50 billion+ global market. I can hire contractors in any part of the world, pay them the local rate (often less than what an American or European typically costs) and make lots of money! Nice thing about corporations is the tax protections offered to me over some staffer!
