osreinstall, you really need to get a clue!
Torvalds and McVoy have known each other for about 10 years, so this is not someone freeloading from aonther, this was something done with forthought by both parties involved! Linus on BitKeeper and the move can be read at: http://linuxtoday.com/developer/2005040602726OSKN. Now you can get a clue before you pontificate more of your ignorence!

The GPL is based upon Copyright law, tested in at least 1 court case (Germany) and prevailed. Since you appear to have no respect for Intelectual Property laws, this probubly means nothing to you!

As to proprietary software, development happens in both the proprietary and Open Source arenas. Microsoft uses the BSD stack, protected by the BSD licence (an Open Source licence). They do not agree with the rules of the GNU Public Lcence, so they do not use softwae that is protected by that license.

As to companies that use or release code under GPL, IBM is not the only one to release sofware under this! Based upon your comments, you also don't understand source management and revision systems (Bit Keeper, CVS, RCS, SCCS, Visual SourceSafe, etc.), perhaps because you are not in a software development house.

I am somewhat confused by your attacks on corporations, intellectual property laws, software develoment and basic research. You are making an arguement that is not based upon facts or even the article but rather on emaotion and your own ingorence of software development (proprietary and open source), what actualy transpired and what the actual issues are. All you appear to be reacting to is that people who believe in the freedom to create software and expand their own knowledge, which you appear to be against!
