At this time Linus was 21 and probably had at least five years programming experience (mostly in assembler, but probably at least one year in C). I don't know whether he was accomplished DOS programmer, but he did know assembler well as he authored a terminal emulator in it. I suspect that both because of emulator (and his vast Prince of Persia experience happy he understood DOS environment well enough to borrow ideas from it.
