Don't understand OS benefits??
You don't understand how it benefits "Joe IT worker" because it's meant to benefit "Joe end user". Most OS programs aren't designed to stick it to MS because of hatred, but rather, to replace MS because of their inferior products. It's no secret that MS software has serious security issues, and no matter how many updates they issue their programs still can't even come close to matching the security of operating systems such as Linux. I challenge anyone to use IE for a week, run an anti-virus scan, then use Firefox for a week and run the same scan. If the results from that don't cause something to click, then you would have to be in denial due to a "frothing at the mouth hatred" for OS applications. As for projects becoming "stagnant" over time, while that may be true occasionally, it's ridiculous to make a generalization like that. There are plenty of OS apps. that have been around for years and continue to grow and improve every year. While I agree there's nothing "wrong/evil" with proprietary software, there is some bad. "Bad" is being focused on making money on a product, when a product is being released without making sure the product is the best that it can be. I know this statement will come with plenty of disagreement and opposition, but OS is creating a standard. With the increase in people using OS for security reasons, the proprietary companies are going to have to rethink the way they are doing things and focus on releasing better, safer products to compete and stay afloat. While OS apps. such as Firefox certainly are nowhere near dominating, the number of people realizing their superiority and using these programs is exploding, and companies such as MS and Adobe are eventually going to lose their foothold. Maybe, instead of "Joe IT workers" being concerned about being expected to charge "$0/hour for my development expertise" the concern should go towards creating stuff that will compete with the OS programs. Anyone who says OS apps. are mediocre obviously hasn't tried the right OS programs. I regularly use OpenOffice (an old, outdated version at that) and it does everything the newest version of MS Office can do, and more. I wouldn't use anything other than Firefox for web-browsing, the amount of spyware and adware I remove from my machine has GREATLY decreased, and the customization of it's functionality is unmatched. And to address the "MS hatred" aspect, plenty of the OS apps. out there are in no way competing with MS. In time Gimp will set the standard to reach for companies like Adobe, Corel etc. Anyone who says Gimp is a "step down" from Photoshop either doesn't know the first thing about using these programs, or just hasn't bothered to take the time to properly compare the two. While Photoshop has a few features that Gimp doesn't "YET" have, anyone who knows what they are doing and has a little sense can achieve all the same things with Gimp, and won't have to spend a ridiculous amount (over $600????) for the program. Personally, Adobe should be ashamed to put a price tag like that on a program.
Instead of worrying about cahrging "$0/hour for development expertise", people in your position should be looking at how to stay ahead of the OS community in the long run, and create the best program possible for the end user (after all, without them your job is pretty much pointless). That would TRULY be a "win/win" situation for everyone!
