Instead of paying $100,000 for software you hire two IT employees to implement, maintain, and develope the system to suit the employers exact needs.

So really Open Source software doesn't eliminate workers but it just changes the landscape. Instead of a few workers working for a big software corporation many more workers work for the people who need the software.

It's just a change in how things are done.

Now if you want to talk harm there is potential short term harm. Investments in mid size software companies will take a hit. Large corporations will weather the storm and small software companies will reap huge rewards with the redistribution of wealth.
