True, but...
There is value in purchasing from the original developer. There is value in purchasing support from the original developer. There is value in a pre-compiled program from a trusted source. These are the reasons why someone would pay instead of getting a copy of the source from a friend or other source.

And, do want to be a billionaire from my killer software or just make a decent living? Do I need to maintain a "monopoly" on my product in order to make a living? Do I want to be in the business of selling software? Answers to these questions help determine what license I will use for distribution of my software.

If I then choose a Free license and fail to make money on it, that is my choice and I may not think it foolish even with that result.

Why must something produce profit to be worthwhile?
