Becoming pure service
Software development is becoming a pure service model.

An entire house can be built without a single bit of "intellectual property." The foundation can be laid, the framing installed, the wiring, plumbing, windows, roof, etc., etc. without using a single patented, copyrighted or otherwise encumbered idea, process or technology. And it can be done right to last for decades and provide plenty of profit for the people who built it.

The magnified value of software via artificial scarcity created by "intelectual property" encumberances is eroded by Free Software and Open Source Software. Programmers and other IT people will continue to make a good living (plumbers are not poor) with their skills. The vast artificial wealth is going away.

Of course, MS, Sun, etc. want to maintain the well of wealth as long as they can. They believe it is in their business interest to do so. But, eventually, software components will be come commodities that software builders can use as the need arrises. Just as plumbers can use perfectly suitable pipes that anyone can get anywhere for very little cost and add excellent value to a house or other structure.
