Symantec reports that there were more than 1000 infections. In their preamble, they state that there were an estimated one million infections in Korea alone.

The BIOS virus in affect was an urban legend or so limited in scope as to be irrelevent.
If even one BIOS virus attack was successful, your argument becomes moot. The scope is immaterial.

Note once again in the Symantec article that is states "It can overwrite your system BIOS. If that happens, you should contact the BIOS vendor for instructions on how to fix it." The article does not state that the virus attempts but fails. It says that the virus can overwrite the BIOS.
