GAMES GAMES AND MORE GAMES...90% of all software sold shrink wrapped are GAMES. Then the rest is more than likely Office apps/utils/graphics editors

Office apps? Finacial software? You get them free in Linux. There is no need to buy them. They have been done to death a billion times over the past decade...exactly how many differant ways can you write MS Office? Or quicken?

Utils? Anti-virus software...what viruses? Firewalls? WE HAVE IPTABLES WITH EASY TO USE GUI INTERFACES ALREADY!!! disk clean up...ghosting? either don't need them or already have backup software.

Then there is the graphics/DVD ripping home studio crap. The software parents think they need to make their kids look perfect in every picture. How many times have you upgraded photoshop? WHY DID YOU? WHAT IT DIDN'T WORK THE FIRST TIME?

The simple truth that people seam to be missing is it is no longer the 90's. Ignoring games for the moment there is simply no reason to keep reinventing the wheel every two years. And that is what has been happening. Most of the software for home users has already been built ages ago. The only reason to upgrade is to keep up with the OS upgrade cycle and the hardware upgrade cycle....BUT THE BIGGEST THING PEOPLE SEAM TO IGNORE IS THE FACT THAT SHRINK WRAPPED SOFTWARE IS ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE ENTIRE SOFTWARE MARKET!!!

So what did you see at ComUSA? A Bunch of games and a bunch of software that has been redone and redone to the point of death. Games are already starting to be ported over to Linux. That's the last big bump. Once we have that we have every kid that begs his mom and dad for that new computer to have Linux. And that is the upgrade cycle today...games...because unless you really really really really need to touch up your photos five billion times there is simply no product out there that needs the proc power we have today. It's all been done..the shrink wrapped industry has lived its day.
