I'm Suspicious
Call me paranoid, but I wonder if SAP isn't getting third parties to rewrite their aging system "for free." Most R/3 code is about 20 years old and showing its age. I've worked in R/3 since 1998 and as amazingly strong and well-integrated it is, it's long past time to refurbish. The data structures are still very sound -- it's mainly the old code that's a drag. The last three OSS notes we sent to SAP defined bugs that SAP acknowledges, but refuses to fix in future releases. Basically, they've given up on the existing code (not the tables). Rather than rewrite their old code, it would appear that they're going to keep their tables and offer standard API's to update the tables via NetWeaver and let third parties create functionality.
