PSion Data packs?
I recall that the PSION Organiser had data packs that were EPROMS, you could write to them, the latest version would be kept in memory and written out to the EPROM before powerdown.

The EPROM held multiple versions, only the latest of any data was used.

This patent sounds like the same thing with EPROM replaced with the word CDROM.

I can't find a good description of them, but here's some background.
