Software patents are a dumb idea
Yet again we see the stupidity of software patents. Here is a company that applied for a patent in 1995 that was granted in 1997. They wait 6 years, until their patented ideas are included in a number of products and standards, then decide to act.

I am all for creative types getting properly recompensed for their efforts, however I can't see that this patent does anything that wasn't being done already, albeit on other media. It was dumb to award the patent, it is plain corporate piracy to lay in wait and watch your patent be used without licence, then decide 6 years down the track that you'll enforce your patent.

Surely there should be a requirement that a patent holder take reasonable action to alert possible infringers as soon as is reasonable?
