In the same way .mac replicates your contacts, bookmarks and so on, Microsoft could tie stuff more to web services.
IE move functionality off the desktop.

Problem is this opens up cometition as anyone on the internet can offer similar services (apart from windows update).

Could be some good stuff down this route, get your CGI film rendered on a grid computer, etc.
You just get charged a few pennies for the rendering on your paypal account.
