Given the security problems, bugs, and the Linux threat, a smart move.
But probably too little too late. They were busy trying to lock in customers and create every posible type of application and bolt it to the OS. That turned out to be a disaster and now they have to figure out how to keep everybody locked-in and still modularize the development to reduce bugs and security problems. We will see what happens.
