I'm a fan of open source but that's not the issue to me with Java. My desire is that Java not be a proprietary solution. I'd prefer it be an open standard run by ANSII, or some equivalent organization. This way I don't have to worry about Java being sold to some other vendor who might decided to eliminate it in favor of some other technology. With that certainty, I can build systems for long-term use and mean it.

Once it became an open standard, it would then be a good sign to see open source implementations of the standard spring up.

Vendors and even open source project teams can do weird things. With a standard implemented by many people, I can move between vendors. There's operational value to that ability.
