Well...
I agree about this being about 'forcing' VB developers to move to the new platform. The shift from VB6 to VB.NET is comparable to the shift that is going to be needed to move from Windows XP (and older versions) to Longhorn. While there will be much backward compatibility, Longhorn really will be a new Windows, and Microsoft needs developers to move to the new platform. If it means alienating and possibly driving away a certain percentage of VB developers, I think Microsoft is willing to accept that. It's still better than trying to maintain both the old and the new. Even Microsoft doesn't have the resources for that. C++ is being maintained because so much of Microsoft's code base is developed with it. VB, while a pet of Bill Gates', has never been used extensively within Microsoft. I think this says a lot about how power has shifted within Microsoft as well.

I do disagree, however, about it not being about 'new technology'. It's not about forcing people to upgrade to Longhorn simply for the sake of upgrading. It really is an attempt by MS to leave the 'old' behind and move on. But of course, none of that helps the VB6 developer who has a large code base to support.
