That's the risk you take...

...for programming with a proprietory language. On the other hand, it seems to me there's an opportunity here for VB gurus to do paid consulting work, or maybe even write and market a clone.

If you develop with MS' tools, you follow MS' rules and accept the consequences, both good and bad, or you go elsewhere. Personally, I use MS software as little as possible, and not at all on my personal equipment.

Unlike users of certain other MS software, I know of no evidence that anyone has been pressured into using VB to "remain compatible with the rest of the world".
