IBM never had the Monopoly
Back then Apple had the Monopoly. IBM responded by putting out lower quality PC with much less functionality. But they were behind the game by quite a ways. Along came Compaq with the clones and took away any chance of IBM getting a monopoly and it destroyed Apple's Monopoly when Apple got rid of their clone market.

This what gets me when people claim Linux is not ready. It's the same arguments that us Apple people made back in the early 80s. Look what happened.

Cheaper + freedom took the market.

Now it looks to me that Microsoft is acting Apples example from the mid 80s. Not a good idea.

The clones gave you hardware freedom. Now you have the clone OS being Linux. As No_AXE would call it, a ME TOO product. ME TOO products often are the winners in this type of battle.
