Re: Cannot generalize based on case studies...
>> Granted, this case study probably has validity. However, those findings should not be generalized to all PC users.

I agree this should not be generalized to all users. But in my experience what i found is that it is true for "most users";

These guys who I helped install linux were not grandmas. They were around 25-35 years old, who are working in Tech field. Basically I didnt do it to conduct a case study. When they saw me working on linux on my PC, they wanted to try it too. So I helped them install it on their PC. Btw, internet connection was not the major reason for them to not use linux. Two of them have cable modem. I helped them configure their cable modem for linux. It worked without problem. Another friend even took out his winmodem from his PC and bought a real modem paying 70$ from circuit city.

These guys tried linux for few months, and then gave up due to various reasons.

Some of their comments:-

* The GUI Sucks; Many applications look alien. some of them with those old X11 gui is horrible. And why is this two different GUIs ? I just want one fully functional GUI, with a good set of applications that behave uniformly. Unfortunately linux doesnt have it.

* The fonts are ugly. Star office is just OK, but nowhere close to MS office. And the fonts in AbiWord just sucks. Do those guys have any idea about the shape of english alphabets ?

* Its a nightmare installing a new application in linux. It keeps complaining about package dependencies. I am tired of it. Enough of it.

* I thought Linux with GIMP will be a good choice for me to do some graphics editing. But I tried GIMP for few days, but it keeps crashing on me. Linux itself is stable; but what is the use ot a rock solid OS, when the applications that we use crashes frequently.

If you look at the above comments from my friends you can see that none of them were due to the fact that linux was not pre-installed on their machine.

Thats all I wanted to state.
