They were able to prevent effective competition at the very time when the competition was strongest (IBM, Novell, and Apple). They were able to stop any of the alternatives from getting any traction in the market by threatening the OEMs. This made competing against Microsoft in the operating systems market a losing bet no matter how good the product. Had this not been the case, there would probably be better, more traditional (read commercial/closed-source) competitors by now. The absence of commercial competitors is proof that nobody thinks that this is a viable competition.
