Even though I dont like MS's business practices, I dont agree with you on this. The single most important reason for microsoft being where it is today is that they understood an average person's technical abilities, and developed an OS that is easy to use and maintain. Nobody else was bothered to go this way other than Apple. But then you dont get MAC-OSX for PCs. So if everyone had decided to go Apple's way, our choices would have been even more limited and we would have been fighting a bigger monopoly now. At least now we have choices for hardware vendors.

Now don't tell me there is Linux. I have tried many different linux distributions. Nothing comes anywhere close to where windows is today, even after KDE and GNOME trying to copy all GUI features from Windows. I bought Mandrake Linux from CompUSA and installed on my PC as well as few of my friend's PC. Sometimes I use it, because I work on Unix at office, so it helps me having a unix like OS at home. But my friends never boots into Linux. Now do you think that if they had got it pre-installed it on their PC, they would be using it instead of windows ? No ! they would have either returned the system and ordered for a windows system or they would have bought a windows CD and wiped linux off and installed windows on it.

Now do you think "Just keeping rival OSes from being pre-installed is the single most important reason Micro$hat is where it is" ?
