I suppose
that IF Sun were to provide most of the benefits of an open standard, then NOT making Java open-source would not hurt it. People are not complaining about not getting access to source code, they are complaining that Sun controls the DIRECTION of Java. This is an odd state of affairs, as OSS has NO control over directions - it goes where the wind carries it. Only time will tell if central planning works with software (sure didn't work with communism . . .).
