A compiler is THE key
to speed, efficiency, "tightness" and robustness of compiled code.
Without a best of class compiler, most code will perform like Windows. If more optimisation features can be implemented in the compiler, a coder will be able to tweak or fine-tune the performance of his software.
A good compiler will allow you to make acceptable software, but a great compiler will bring the performance up a notch or two (or allow you to run it on a 386 from a diskette).

Maybe you used GCC but you never worked with GCC.
Big difference here for high-end programmers.
