Maybe this is actually about...
... getting to know more about customers. Hard to see why they'd consider getting into the business themselves.

An article linked in a post yesterday described a place on the Microsoft campus where they replicate customers' IT situation, hardware, software, and data (privacy protected). The customer practices migrating with product teams nearby. Useful when they go home and do the real thing.

As the article observed, Microsoft keeps the replica, both for responding to the customer and for experiment. They're curious about how their software is used away from Redmond.

Why?

Because of the problem competing with their most challenging opponent: prior versions of Microsoft software. They have to find upgrades significant enough to cause people to decide to spend a substantial amount of money.

Studies in which people say what they want or need hypothetically are of limited value. People very often can't remember or don't know that they need or want something. And the things they do ask for may not be of any great use.
The only way to find out is to be there.

Microsoft's making a substantial effort to be there.
