It's not a kernel patch
but rather a kernel module. And as such you don't have to reboot to get that module working, but simple type the init script command (in my case I think it's "/etc/init.d/vmware start"). It is compiled against your specific kernel though. Win4Lin, on the other hand, I do believe IS a patched kernel.

But yes since most people use the precompiled kernels that come with Fedora, SuSE, etc. VMWare supplies precompiled modules that were compiled against those respective kernel source codes.
